The islands of Sumatra and Java have grown cigar tobacco since the Dutch colonial era, and Sumatra gave its name to a wrapper style that's now grown around the world.

Where it grows

Sumatra grew the original Sumatra wrapper. The Besuki region in eastern Java grows leaf for wrapper and binder, and a lot of it goes into the dry-cured European cigars made in the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium.

The style

Indonesian leaf tends to be mild and slightly sweet. Sumatra seed now grows in Ecuador and elsewhere, and that's where most of the Sumatra wrappers on premium cigars come from today.
