Brazil

Brazil grows a lot of tobacco, and for cigars the story is in Bahia, in the northeast, where the leaf is dark and naturally sweet.

Where it grows

The Recôncavo region around Cruz das Almas and São Félix grows Mata Fina, a dark, sweet leaf used for filler and wrapper. Arapiraca, in the state of Alagoas, grows a thicker leaf that often becomes maduro wrapper.

The style

Brazilian tobacco is known for sweetness and cocoa. Much of it gets blended into cigars rolled in Central America, where it adds depth.

Names you'll see

Dannemann has been making cigars in São Félix since 1873. The CAO Brazilia wears an Arapiraca wrapper.
